Poland continues to strengthen its position on Europe’s scientific map, combining strong academic traditions with a dynamic and increasingly international research environment. Prestigious European grants and national support programmes awarded to researchers based in Poland confirm the country’s growing visibility and competitiveness in global science.

This trend is reflected in the success of Dr. Ludwik Gąsiorowski, a zoologist from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw, who has received an EMBO Installation Grant from the European Molecular Biology Organization.

In addition to the EMBO grant, Dr. Gąsiorowski is also a recipient of the Polish Returns Programme (Polskie Powroty) run by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. The programme supports outstanding researchers returning to Poland to establish their research careers at leading Polish institutions.

The EMBO Installation Grant is one of the most competitive funding schemes in Europe. In the latest call, only ten early-career researchers from nine countries were selected, with Dr. Gąsiorowski being the only awardee conducting his research in Poland.

The combined support from EMBO and NAWA enables the development of an independent research group in Warsaw, focused on the evolutionary biology and genomics of microscopic flatworms. The project strengthens Poland’s research potential and deepens international scientific collaboration.

This achievement demonstrates how Poland effectively connects international excellence with national talent programmes. By supporting scientific independence, mobility, and long-term career development, Poland is reinforcing its role as an attractive destination for world-class research in the life sciences.
