This year’s edition of the Ulam NAWA programme will provide scholarships to 60 scientists from 26 countries. The programme plays an important role in building international scientific cooperation. To date, the programme has supported more than 300 researchers from over 50 countries worldwide.
The largest group of recipients gathers specialists from India, Germany, Italy, and Spain. For the first time, we received applications from countries such as Slovenia, North Macedonia, New Zealand, Finland, Ethiopia, and Belarus. One of the fellows boasts a Seal of Excellence certificate from Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships. Among the recipients of the 6th edition is a Chilean researcher from the University of Iceland, who will study “Non-Lorentzian Limits, Strings, and Black Holes.”
The 6th edition of the programme received 197 applications, 60 of which were recommended for funding.

As in previous years, most applicants focused on natural, engineering, and social sciences. Most projects will be conducted at the Silesian University of Technology, the Wrocław University of Technology, the University of Warsaw, and the University of Wrocław. Research stays at Polish universities and research institutes will begin in February 2025.
“Thanks to the Ulam NAWA programme, foreign scientists can research in various fields in Poland. Some of the projects selected for implementation in the 6th edition could revolutionise our understanding of physics. Still, there are also interesting propositions related to artificial intelligence that could develop solutions to the most complex challenges of the modern world. We believe that such an interdisciplinary approach is the key to scientific breakthroughs,” said Dr Wojciech Karczewski, Director General of NAWA.
Scientists from all over the world will conduct research in Polish laboratories for 6 months to 2 years. The Ulam NAWA programme enables Polish scholars to invite researchers from abroad regardless of their age, field of research, or country of origin, including Polish scientists working permanently abroad; the latter group may constitute up to 10% of scholarship recipients in each edition. Universities and research institutes may invite specialists in their priority areas to Poland who will significantly develop the institution’s research, strengthen didactics, or support the institution in preparing applications for prestigious grants.
Scholarship recipients will receive a monthly stipend of PLN 11.500 and a mobility allowance to cover travel arrangements. Thanks to the financial support, they will conduct scientific research, partake in postdoctoral internships, and will have the possibility to obtain materials for research or scientific publication. They will also have the opportunity to teach at their hosting institutions.
Ulam NAWA aims to strengthen the internationalisation of Polish universities and scientific institutions. The programme supports the invitation to Poland of both recognised and promising scientists with at least a doctoral degree who will strengthen the scientific potential of Polish higher education institutions and become involved in local research projects and teaching.
Thanks to Ulam NAWA, Polish universities and research institutes can invite international experts to work in fields that are key to the development of Polish academia.
