Professor Stanisław Bielecki, a distinguished scientist and former Rector of Lodz University of Technology (2008–2016), has been appointed Ambassador of the World Bioeconomy Association (WBA) for Poland and the Baltic States. This appointment marks a significant recognition of his long-standing contributions to biotechnology and the development of the bioeconomy.
The World Bioeconomy Association is a global non-profit organisation established in December 2024 during the World Bioeconomy Forum in Washington, D.C. The WBA promotes bioeconomy as a strategic driver of sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges — including climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, and public health — by encouraging the sustainable use of biological resources, cutting-edge biotechnologies, and advanced biomanufacturing frameworks.
In his new role, Professor Bielecki will act as a key bridge between scientific communities, industry leaders, policy makers, and the wider public across Central and Eastern Europe. Ambassadors of the WBA are tasked with strengthening regional and international collaboration, bringing expert insight into the association’s initiatives, and helping align scientific innovation with societal and economic priorities.
The decision to appoint Professor Bielecki reflects his exceptional academic leadership, extensive expertise in molecular and industrial biotechnology, and his influential role in shaping both national and European-level strategies for bioeconomy development. Over several decades, he has been at the forefront of integrating fundamental research with real-world applications, contributing to foundational advances in enzymology, biocatalysis, biomaterials, and industrial bioprocesses.
Under his stewardship, key initiatives and research platforms have emerged that support innovation ecosystems and promote collaboration across sectors. His global engagement and advocacy for science-based policy underscore the growing importance of the bioeconomy as a pillar of sustainable economic transformation.
This appointment not only honours Professor Bielecki’s personal achievements but also signals Poland’s rising influence in international science and innovation networks, particularly in areas where biological science intersects with sustainability and industrial development.
