On 1 August 2025, it was announced that Prof. Tomasz Dietl, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IF PAN), has been awarded the Tohoku University International Award – Special Award, granted to individuals who enhance the university’s international standing.

Prof. Dietl leads the International Centre for Interfacing Magnetism and Superconductivity with Topological Matter (MagTop). The nomination emphasizes that he is a globally respected theoretical physicist, renowned for his work in spintronics and topological materials, and that he played a key role in advancing spintronics research at Tohoku University.

The nomination further highlights that his 2000 Science paper, which proposed a theory of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors, is the most‑cited publication in Tohoku University history—with 9,910 citations as of 30 April 2025. It also notes that Prof. Dietl’s total citation count exceeds 35,000.

Prof. Dietl served as a professor at Tohoku’s Research Institute of Electrical Communication from 1999, and from 2012 to 2023, he was a principal investigator at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR). He was also deeply involved in Tohoku’s international GP‑Spin doctoral program.
