Prof. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, a leading Polish molecular biologist from the University of Gdańsk, has been elected as a member of the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM).

Prof. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, a leading Polish molecular biologist from the University of Gdańsk, has been elected as a member of the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM).The distinction places him among approximately 150 top microbiologists across Europe and highlights the growing international visibility of Polish life sciences.

The European Academy of Microbiology was established in 2009 under the auspices of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies. Its mission is to promote excellence in microbiology, foster scientific exchange, and provide expert input on key issues in the field. Membership is by nomination and election, making it one of the highest recognitions within the European microbiological community.

Prof. Węgrzyn heads the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Gdańsk and is one of Poland’s most internationally active researchers in the biological sciences. His scientific output includes more than 500 publications in molecular biology, microbiology, genetics and biochemistry, as well as 12 patents. His research has contributed to the development of innovative approaches to treating genetic disorders, including mucopolysaccharidosis type III (Sanfilippo syndrome), and has explored molecular mechanisms relevant to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

As Prof. Węgrzyn has emphasized, the election reflects not only his individual achievements but also the work of his research team and the broader strength of Polish microbiology. Candidates for EAM membership are nominated by existing members and selected through a voting process, underscoring the peer-recognition character of the honour.

Among Polish scientists previously elected to the Academy is Prof. Anna Karnkowska from the University of Warsaw, further demonstrating Poland’s active presence in European microbiological research.

Prof. Węgrzyn’s election sends a clear signal: Polish research institutions continue to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of molecular biology and microbiology in Europe.
