On September 23, 2024, the Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw hosted the “Focus on Frontier Research” event in collaboration with the European Research Council (ERC).
The event featured high-level discussions on the importance of frontier research in addressing global challenges and the role of the ERC in this process, with the ERC President, the President of the PAS and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council, in her opening remarks, highlighted the European Commission’s proposal to increase research funding across the EU. She emphasized the need for greater investment in advanced technologies and researchers to compete with China and the U.S.
“These are the conditions for our future success and growth. It’s only by acting together that the EU and its member states can hope to compete with superpowers like China and the US”.
The event commenced with a panel discussion featuring:
- Prof. Andrzej Szeptycki, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education
- Prof. Marek Konarzewski, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences
- Prof. Maria Leptin, President of the ERC
- Prof. Anetta Undas, Chair of the National Science Centre (NCN) Council
- Prof. Justyna Olko, ERC grant recipient from the University of Warsaw
The discussion was moderated by Prof. Leszek Kaczmarek, Member of the ERC from Nencki Institute.
This high-level gathering offered participants insights into the latest developments and future directions of the European Research Council. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with ERC experts, including grant holders, former panel members, and ERC representatives.
