Dr. Nicoletta Makowska-Zawierucha from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has been awarded the National Champion in the third edition of the international Frontiers Planet Prize 2025 competition and now has the opportunity to secure one million Swiss francs to support her groundbreaking environmental research.
The Frontiers Planet Prize is an international competition dedicated to scientists and research institutions, organized by the academic publisher Frontiers. The initiative recognizes three groundbreaking scientific publications each year that significantly contribute to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and the improvement of life on Earth. This year’s edition evaluates research articles published in 2024.
National Nominating Bodies are responsible for selecting candidates at the country level. In Poland, this role is fulfilled by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), which selected three outstanding publications for the next stage of the competition. An international jury of 100 sustainability experts then chose 19 National Champions from these submissions.
Among those selected is Dr. Makowska-Zawierucha from the Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Biology at Adam Mickiewicz University. Her recognized work is titled “Arctic plasmidome analysis reveals distinct relationships among associated antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence genes along anthropogenic gradients“.
The Frontiers Planet Prize recognises transformational research that shows the greatest potential to address the world’s most urgent environmental challenges.
The International Champions will be revealed at an awards ceremony in June 2025.
