The aim of the partnership initiative announced by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (U.S. NSF) in August 2023 was to support excellence in science, education, and innovation through collaboration between Poland, Ukraine, and the USA, as well as to promote and catalyse integration of Ukrainian researchers in the global research community.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is the initiator and the lead agency, responsible for the merit-based evaluation of all submitted proposals.
The budget of the U.S.NSF – one of the world’s largest research and education funding agencies – for research involving U.S. project partners was $5,430,594 and the budget for funding Ukrainian partners was $2,508,971. NAWA funding for Polish partners amounted to PLN 5,539,020 and allowed for the funding of eight supplementary grants, the so-called International Supplements, which involved integrating researchers from Ukraine and Poland into existing U.S. NSF-funded scientific consortia. IMPRESS-U (International Multilateral Partnerships for Resilient Education and Science System in Ukraine) is the result of an international agreement between grant organisations from six countries: USA (U.S.NSF and NASEM), Poland (NAWA and NCN), Ukraine (NRFU), Estonia (ETAG), Latvia (LCS) and Lithuania (RCL). The IMPRESS-U programme will support research in any field of science, engineering, education and innovation. The partnership is open to proposals for joint ventures submitted to the U.S.NSF by U.S. scientists in collaboration with scientists from Ukraine and researchers from at least one partner country. Particularly sought will be projects that increase efficiencies in international partnerships, support scientific staff, and contribute to building a modern research, education and innovation ecosystem in Ukraine.
