The Foundation for Polish Science
The Foundation for Polish Science has been in operation since 1991. It is a non-governmental, non-political, non-profit institution which pursues the mission of supporting science. It is the largest source of science funding in Poland outside of the state budget.The Foundation realizes its statutory purposes through:

- Support for distinguished scholars and research teams in all fields of inquiry
- Assisting innovative ventures and commercialization of scientific discoveries and inventions.
Rules for award of support by the Foundation:

- Main motto of FNP – “Supporting the best, so that they can become even better”
- Direct support– targeted to scholars and research groups
- Competition format– all grants, prizes and stipends are awarded on the basis of a competition, regardless the citizenship of candidates
- Peer-review method– assessment of achievements of participants in the Foundation’s competitions are made by scientists
- Scientific excellence– the most important criterion in awarding of support
- “Hard money” principle– highly selective in awarding support in all programmes, strict accounting procedures for funding awarded.

Programmes:
The FNP Prize
Individual prize for eminent researchers for their outstanding achievements or discoveries. Regarded as the most prestigious of its kind in Poland.
Candidates for the FNP Prize may be submitted by outstanding representatives from the field of science, invited in name by the Foundation’s Board and Council.

START
Stipends for young, talented researchers – employees or doctoral students at an institution of higher learning in Poland or other Polish institution whose chartered purposes include conducting scientific research – at the outset of their career, who have already achieved some success in their field.
Applications may be filed in the programme by scientists with original research accomplishments who will not be over age 30 during the year of filing the application. Applicants over age 30 may also apply if they meet the additional conditions provided in the competition documentation. Young scholars are eligible to apply for stipends if they:

- are doctoral students in Poland or are performing R&D work in Poland at an entity with conducting scientific research and development as one of its statutory purposes,
- can demonstrate documented scientific accomplishments.

International Research Agendas (IRAP)
This programme gives top scientists, irrespective of their nationality, the opportunity to create a research unit (innovative center of excellence) in Poland, which will conduct world-class R&D activities focused on a specific and timely scientific challenge.
The total amount committed for the International Research Agendas programme under the Smart Growth Operational Programme (Measure 4.3) is about EUR 126 million.

International Research Agendas, PLUS Module (IRAP PLUS)
This programme gives top scientists, irrespective of their nationality, the opportunity to create a research unit (innovative center of excellence) in Poland, which will conduct world-class R&D activities focused on a specific and timely scientific challenge. The PLUS Module of the International Research Agendas programme supports projects carried out as part of the Teaming competition held by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme.

Nicolaus Copernicus Polish-German Research Award
The Copernicus Award is donated by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP). It awards outstanding achievements in German-Polish cooperation.
Candidates may be nominated by researchers holding a doctoral degree who are employed at a Polish or German academic institution. Self-nominations shall be considered.
The award is granted biannually to academics on the basis of a competition, irrespective of their field of science. The value of the award is 200 000 euro (100 000 euro for each of two recipients).
The award is granted once every two years. Next call will be announced in the second half of 2021.

Maria Skłodowska and Pierre Curie – French-Polish Scientific Award
The Maria Skłodowska and Pierre Curie Polish–French Scientific Award is a joint initiative of the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), and the French Academy of Sciences (Académie des sciences). The aim of the Skłodowska/Curie Award is to recognize distinguished scientific achievements resulting from French–Polish cooperation. The award was established to mark the Polish–French Year of Science.
The laureates receive EUR 15,000 each, including an individual prize of EUR 5,000 and a grant of EUR 10,000 for continued scientific cooperation.
The award is made on the basis of nominations, including self-nominations.

The Leszek Kołakowski Honorary Fellowship
The goal of the programme is to honour and promote the research of young scholars, of any nationality, who have made an outstanding contribution to the history of ideas or the history of medieval and modern philosophy up to 1939.
Candidates are nominated. The selection process is in two stages:

- In the first stage candidates for the Scholarship are nominated by referees chosen by the Jury.
- In the second stage the Jury asks the candidates to submit an academic CV and a description of their research plans for the next 12 months.
The Jury, if necessary, may consult external referees in selecting the winning candidate.
The scholarship is awarded biennially. The amount of the grant is up to PLN 100 000.

Alexander von Humboldt Polish Honorary Research Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to outstanding German scholars with the highest qualifications and a significant contribution to global research, as recognition for their previous research achievements and in order to permit them to conduct scientific research at a selected institution in Poland.
The names of prospective grantees from amongst German scholars are submitted to the Foundation for Polish Science by distinguished Polish scientists, who are obliged to provide appropriate facilities for their candidate to carry out a research project as designed by the beneficiary.
The research stay (from 3 – 6 months) may be split into several periods over three years. At present, the amount awarded as fellowship is EUR 4000 per month.

The Poland – U.S. Science Award
The Poland – U.S. Science Award is a common undertaking between the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) and the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS). The purpose of the award is to give recognition to outstanding achievements accomplished through Polish-American scientific cooperation.
The scope of the award covers the entire spectrum of scientific research excluding art. Awardees each receive $5,000 as recognition for their achievements.
The award is made on the basis of nominations, including self-nominations.

TEAM-NET
The TEAM-NET programme grants research units resources for funding interdisciplinary research carried out by a network of cooperating research teams managed by outstanding scientists.

Funding of publication of original and previously unpublished works in the humanities and social sciences selected by competition.
Works may be submitted for the competition by the author of works in the humanities and social sciences written in Polish. Collective works, master’s theses and bachelor’s theses are not accepted for the competition.

MONOGRAPHS – Editing/Adiustacje
Financing the costs of linguistic editing of works prepared for publication in a conference language in the field of the humanities and social sciences.
Works may be submitted for the competition by the author of a scholarly monograph in the humanities and social sciences prepared for publication in a conference language, with an affiliation with a Polish research unit. Collective works, master’s theses and bachelor’s theses are not accepted for the competition.
This competition is conducted on a rolling basis.
