National Science Centre (NCN)NCN is a government agency, supervised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, set up in 2011 to support basic research in Poland. Basic research is defined as empirical or theoretical endeavours undertaken to gain new knowledge of the foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without any direct commercial use. NCN funds projects in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering. The NCN has funding schemes dedicated to researchers at different stages of their career. Goals

Foreigners may take part in most of the calls launched by the National Science Centre. The call documents are always available in English and only small parts of the proposal must be completed in Polish. For more information on the calls, visit our website and look for “Funding schemes”. Participation of foreign researchers is particularly welcome under the following schemes:
OPUS A call for research proposals open to all researchers irrespective of research experience. The projects may be carried out by the principal investigator alone or by research teams including an adequate number of assistant researchers.
SONATINA A call targeted at researchers who earned their PhD up to three years before the submission of the proposal. The grant includes full-time employment as a researcher and provides funds for the completion of the research project at the host institution.
SONATA A call for research projects carried out by researchers with a PhD degree. The objective of the call is to support principal investigators in innovative basic research, including the use of cutting-edge research equipment and/or methodology. The call is open to researchers who earned their PhD between 2 and 7 years prior to the submission of the proposal.
SONATA BIS A call for research projects that aim to establish a new research team, carried out by researchers with at least a PhD degree, who earned their PhD between 5 and 12 years prior to the submission of the proposal. The call is open to outstanding early stage researchers wishing to set up their own research team to conduct particularly innovative research projects.
MAESTRO A call targeted at experienced researchers who wish to conduct pioneering research projects, often with an interdisciplinary perspective, which are essential for scientific progress, expand the current state of knowledge and may likely lead to significant scientific discoveries. The call is open to researchers with at least a PhD degree, who have published at least 5 papers in renowned academic press/journals and coordinated at least two research projects selected in a call for proposals within a period of 10 years prior to the submission of the proposal.
POLONEZ BIS is a postdoctoral fellowship programme coordinated by the Polish National Science Centre under Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND (grant agreement no 945339). The programme will launch three calls in 2021 and 2022 to recruit 120 experienced scientists who will relocate to Poland for 24 months to carry out basic research projects in public or private institutions of their choice. POLONEZ BIS guarantees successful Fellows full time employment and an additional grant for the implementation of their own projects in a research field of their choice. The research component will be complemented by a series of attractive workshops on transferable skills, and an opportunity to cooperate with startups and non-governmental organisations during short-term secondments. Applicants: researchers with a PhD degree or at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the call launch (researchers displaced by conflicts will be able to extend the 12 months limit).
