The scientific journal Dental and Medical Problems (DMP), published by Wroclaw Medical University, has reached the highest-ever position among Polish medical journals published by universities.

In the 2025 edition of the Journal Citation Reports, Dental and Medical Problems achieved an Impact Factor (IF) of 3.9, ranking 18th out of 162 journals globally in the Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine category (Q1).

“This is the highest position ever reached by a Polish academic medical journal published by a university,” said Wroclaw Medical University in its official statement.

The Impact Factor is a bibliometric indicator that reflects a journal’s influence based on citation counts. It is calculated annually by the independent company Clarivate. Compared to the previous year, DMP saw a remarkable rise in IF from 2.7 to 3.9 — a record-breaking increase.

“No Polish university has ever published a medical journal with such a high ranking and bibliometric score in its respective categories,” said Professor Mieszko Więckiewicz, Editor-in-Chief of DMP.

Published by the Wroclaw Medical University Press, Dental and Medical Problems is now among the top journals in both categories it is indexed in:

  • 18th out of 162 in “Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine”

  • 46th out of 332 in “Medicine, General & Internal”

In both categories, it holds a Q1 position, placing it in the top 25% of journals worldwide.

The Journal Citation Indicator (JCI) has also significantly increased, now standing at 1.36. In the Scopus database, DMP is likewise ranked in Q1 in both subject areas. Notably, Dental and Medical Problems is a relatively young player in the global scientific publishing scene, having received its first IF only in 2023.

Prof. Więckiewicz credited the journal’s success to the dedicated editorial team, including Deputy Editor-in-Chief Dr. hab. Helena Martynowicz, language editors Joanna Gudarowska and Jolanta Prazeres, layout editor Adam Barg, the Scientific Board, and section editors.

“Our formula for success: internationalisation and a relentless focus on quality,” noted Prof. Więckiewicz, who became Editor-in-Chief in October 2020.

One of the key strategic moves was to reorganise the Scientific Board, now composed of approximately 80% internationally recognised researchers. The editorial team also implemented strict international reporting standards for all submitted research, alongside a strong commitment to editorial ethics, which plays a role in IF assessments.
